The Story Corner: Nelly on Wheels

For five years, Nelly was the kind of dog who lived for the outdoors. A Lab mix who knew every trail and beach in Manitoba, always ready for the next adventure, always leading the way. Then came the IVDD diagnosis. Stage 5... The most severe.

Intervertebral Disc Disease changed everything in an instant. The trails she loved, the beaches she explored, the freedom she'd always known, were suddenly out of reach. Her back legs, once tireless on long hikes, no longer worked.

But Nelly's family saw something in her that others might have missed: a dog who deserved a second chance. With a wheelchair supporting her hind legs and Polar Skis attached for winter, Nelly stepped outside again. And ran. On snow. On trails. The same Manitoba landscapes that had felt impossibly far away.

"Life is still pawsitively amazing," her family shares. And watching Nelly wheel through snow-covered paths, tail wagging, nose working overtime: you believe it. What began as one dog's recovery has become something bigger. Through her Instagram community @nellywheels, Nelly has become an ambassador for disabled dogs everywhere, proving that you can not only survive, but thrive with a disability. Her family's message to everyone who stops them on walks: "Don't feel sorry for dogs like her. Nelly is happy, pain-free, and living her best life."
